The Falcons claimed seven of 11 bouts over the Midshipmen.

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Taking seven of 11 bouts from their service academy rival Navy, the Air Force boxing team kicked off the 2008-09 season with an impressive performance on Friday, Oct. 3, at the Academy. In front of a thunderous, past-capacity crowd in the Upper Boxing Room, the Falcons made a strong statement for the upcoming season, winning early and often.

From the first bell, the Falcons set the tone of the contest. Newcomer Nicholas Cataldo claimed a decision over Oludare Adeniji in the 175-pound match-up. In his collegiate debut, Cataldo controlled the pace of the bout to claim a unanimous vote. In the second bout, a 151-pound contest, sophomore Michael Dunn picked up right where Cataldo left off, using a flurry of strikes to post a unanimous victory over Casey Sheldon.

Despite a valiant comeback in the final round, senior Rudy Bowen suffered a split decision loss to Chris Bertucci in the 160-pound bout. Junior Cory Tintzman quickly extinguished any momentum Navy may have gained, by dispatching of Marcus Johnson in the first round of the heavyweight bout. Tintzman used several strong, hard punches to earn the quick victory by referee stopped contest.

Navy collected another win, as Mike Stedman decisioned senior Boyce Loomis in a 189-pound bout. Sophomore Joseph Silvio and senior Elon Brumfield put the Falcons back in the win column with a pair of exciting victories. Silvio received all of the judges' votes in a 160-pound bout with Chris O'Brien, while Brumfield won a referee-stopped bout with Josh Fernandez at 184 pounds.

Air Force and Navy split the final four bouts. Rick Wiegert took a decision from senior Andrew Catoire at 191 pounds, while classmate Dean Chuva recorded a split decision over Paul Hollwedel in the 135-pound bout. Chuva, who was boxing above his normal division of 112 pounds, used a strong performance in the final round to wear down his opponent and earn the victory. Chuva's decision also guaranteed the team title for the Falcons over their Midshipmen counterparts.

Antone Aku won a referee-stopped-contest over junior Bailey Ball in the 150-pound bout, but sophomore Matthew DeMars closed out the night for Air Force with a hard-hitting unanimous decision over Logan Hershman in the 115-pound bout.

Following the contest, Dunn was selected as the Boxer of the Week by the program's coaches and support staff. It is the first such victory for Dunn, who earned a spot in the finals of the Wing Open Championships as a freshman last year.

The Falcons remain at the Academy next weekend, as they host the first Friday Night Fights of the season in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym on Oct. 10. Action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
